The Ad Council invented the concept of “public service announcements” in American society and has been an active part of our culture for almost 70 years. The Council was founded in 1940s and their earliest campaigns were World War II era posters, reminding citizens about the importance of protecting our country’s security during the war effort. Over the years, the Ad Council has adapted to new methods of technology and taken on every topic from preventing forest fires to childhood obesity.

Well, these days, the Ad Council is going high tech and jumping on the social media bandwagon. It’s true – social media is an even better way to get the word out than television now, especially for the younger generations. They’ve unveiled their new site, My Ad Council, which they developed with support from AOL.

The purpose of My Ad Council is to be a platform for people to share PSAs through their social networking websites to spread awareness about the causes they care about. The site also provides resources for users to get educated about the issues behind the PSAs and the organizations working to create change in that area.

The site’s features:

• You can share the PSA on Twitter, Facebook and about every other social networking site you can think of.

• You can sign up to get updates about the campaigns you care about, including pet adoption, autism awareness, drunk driving prevention and more.

• You can read up about the organization that made the PSA and click to fan them on Facebook or follow them on Twitter.

• You can also make comments about the PSAs on the My Ad Council site or give them a thumbs up.

Check out My Ad Council, pass along your favorite PSAs and get networking! A well made video has incredible power to rally people together for an important cause.
